How Google Location History Works: A Complete Guide
Google Location History is a powerful feature that creates a private map of where you’ve been with your signed-in devices. It tracks and stores your location data to provide useful, personalized services like traffic predictions for your commute, better search results, and rediscovering places you’ve visited. But how does it really work, and what control do you have over your data?
How Google Tracks Your Location
Google Location History works by periodically collecting location data from your devices. It uses a combination of signals to determine your position with accuracy, including:
- GPS: Provides precise location data from satellites.
- Wi-Fi: Uses nearby Wi-Fi networks to estimate your location, even indoors.
- Cellular Networks: Determines your position based on your proximity to cell towers.
This information is saved to your Google Account and compiled into your personal “Timeline,” which you can access through Google Maps.
How to Access and View Your Location History
Viewing your travel history is straightforward. Follow these steps to access your Google Maps Timeline:
- Open Google Maps: Go to the Google Maps website on a browser or open the app.
- Sign In: Make sure you are signed into the correct Google Account.
- Open the Menu: In the top-left corner, click the menu icon (three horizontal lines).
- Select “Your timeline”: This will open a detailed, visual map of your stored location history.
- Explore Your History: You can browse your timeline by year, month, or day to see the routes you took and the places you visited, including dates and times.
How to Delete Your Location History
You have full control over your stored data and can delete it at any time. You can delete individual trips, entire days, or all of your history.
- Go to your “Your timeline” page in Google Maps.
- Click the Settings icon (a gear ⚙️) and select “Settings and privacy.”
- Under “Location settings,” you will find options to:
- Delete all Location History: This will permanently erase all the data saved to your timeline.
- Set up automatic deletion: You can choose to automatically delete history older than 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months. This is a great “set it and forget it” privacy feature.
How to Pause or Turn Off Location History
If you no longer want Google to save your location data going forward, you can pause the feature.
- Go to your Google Account’s Activity controls page.
- Find the “Location History” section.
- Toggle the switch to “Pause”. Google will ask you to confirm your choice.
Important: Pausing Location History stops your timeline from being updated. However, some location data might still be collected and stored by other Google services (like Search or Maps) if your “Web & App Activity” setting is on. You can manage that setting on the same “Activity controls” page.
