Notes on Greek mythology

Notes on Greek mythology One of the major issues that rightly continues to disturb us and that is not answer their questions drawn around the question: what was there before there was the World? To answer this puzzling question, the ancient Greeks invented stories with those seeking to give a possible explanation.

ZeusSo that men are the result of countless gods unions between gods and human gods. Unions beginning after Chaos and end with the marriage of Pyrrha and Deucalion, father and mother to all men and women on earth.
To understand the Greek legends it is necessary that we compare with other people who invent stories. And that is possible. Civilizations that lived in other times: in America, China, India ... forged through myths, stories invented a nonexistent past. The essence of these stories is shared by all, or at least has much in common, despite the distance and time that separate them. To say that, in addition, art and literature of all time has found inspiration in these stories.

What is different from Greek mythology, for cults or religions that have existed in the world and there is that their stories do not contain any teachings of a spiritual nature. Neither the Greeks created no written code or holy book where the inclusion of short stories that befell them their gods, which originally ran from mouth to mouth. In fact, the first family tree of Greek gods, was drafted in the eighth century before Christ, being the first traces of the existence of an ancient Greek civilization two thousand years before our era.

What distinguishes gods and men is that the gods are immortal. Its existence is not subject to the hardships of the men, who need to eat and noticed the weariness of work. The gods also eat, but eat the food that makes them timeless. Something that humans can not do.

The fantasy world of Greek mythology, dwarfs any imaginative exercise, no matter how exaggerated it is our imagination, always fall short of the mythological stories of ancient Greece.

Zeus, the supreme god.

Above all gods, in a privileged place stood the throne of Zeus. He made a good number of wives, of course endowed with the same qualities as him were goddesses. His first wife was Metis. Apparently she is responsible for the position of dominance over the other gods of Zeus, as she is the representation of intelligence. Her power was able to raise and maintain the throne of the god Zeus, who is favored in the war and in love. Like many other mythological marriage, this marriage did not end well, there came a time when Zeus wanted to possess not only as wife to the prudence and wisdom, but he wanted to be himself on trial and knowledge, so he decided to have engulfed her and her essence, her body. Zeus he used tricks to deceive his wife. First he challenged them to be transformed into a lion spit fire. Metis, proving he could do it without effort, it became that animal. Thereafter, with worse gear, Zeus proposed to the goddess who transformed into a drop of water, putting in doubt even he could. But Metis, somewhat indignant at the lack of trust of her husband, became a drop of water, once that Zeus used to drink it. The story does not end here, as Metis, when it was swallowed by Zeus, was pregnant with Athena. At the end of the gestation period, Athena was born from the womb of his mother, who, ironically, was in the womb of his father. The birth of Athena was held by the head of Zeus. Needless to say, the head of Zeus disintegrated, taking its place newborn head of Athena, which, within the myth, warrior wears a helmet, sword and shield. Now Zeus really is unbeatable. He has the wisdom and strength, all united in one body immortal.

The great battle takes place between the Olympic gods and the Titans. Struggling to establish his order to annihilate the contrary. The battle could only be victors, the gods were imposed and when it seemed that peace would reign over the world, good intentions are twisted. Gaia, a wife of Zeus, offered as Typhoon descent, having been unfaithful with Tartarus, who was neither god nor titan. The battle between Zeus and Typhon could have finished in the order that Zeus intended for the World, but once again the forces of good are imposed on evil. Although the Typhoon is a monster capable of grabbing with his hands the east and west and forehead strikes the sky, Zeus, with the help of other gods, and since no tendons had been locked in a cave , resurfaces and kills Typhon.

Chaos.

To the Greeks, before anything could exist, there was the Void, they called Chaos. And the Chaos was nothing, a hole that could be contain everything. It was a great immensity or lived where there was nothing. Then Chaos itself, the first child was born: Gaya, the Earth. In that followed his brothers, Nyx, the night, Eros, love, Erebus, darkness and Tartarus, the underworld.

The gods chose Mount Olympus, located in an area of Greece called Thessaly, to take up residence. From there, dominating the sky or heaven, sea and land. Twelve were the great gods who ruled Olympus. Among them, some have won the battle of memory: Zeus, Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite and Narcissus ...

Some excesses divine.

Many stories ruthless hide behind the mythology. Stories where everything is possible. For example Cronos, with a voracious appetite, come to eat their children. His desire was so great that on one occasion, instead of eating what I thought was a baby, she ate a rock. Deception and made him die of indigestion. Or the story of Apollo, who started his son alive from the womb of his wife Coronis, because the woman had been unfaithful with an immortal.
The Cyclops and the Hecatoncheires.

To fend off possible attacks that try to inflict the other gods, Zeus deterrent weapons available. The Cyclopes helped Zeus in his battle of the gods against gods. They offered basic assistance to overcome: the rays. Gaia, the Earth and his wife at the time, was the one who will manufacture. The Cyclops, the fire of his eye, to have an invincible weapon of Zeus. Hecatoncheires the least known, were also protective of the supreme god. With its incredible size, also had a devastating force. With Cyclops and Hecatoncheires as bodyguards, Zeus had protected its dominance against other gods, who always seemed willing to injury.

SIREN

The Sirens.

Sirens dared challenge the Seven Muses. Illusory thought they had a better voice than those. The singing competition was won by the Muses. The punishment for the Sirens was now that his wings were ripped off. With shame, turned into monsters for all hid in the Gulf of Messina. Submerged in the sea, with half a woman's body and covered with scales otherwise, tried to seduce with song (siren) to the unwary sailors. Many of them, according to the Greek mythological tale, fell in love devotedly to those hypnotic and beautiful melodies. The boats that had the misfortune of running into the course they lost the ruling because no sailor. Most could not stand the attraction and jumped overboard after him.

Aphrodite.

Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty. She was also known as "foam born", so it is always coming from the ocean or a shell surrounded by the sea water. Apparently, Aphrodite, was beautiful as grotesque as her husband, the lame Hephaestus, god of fire, which is described as ugly. Perhaps for that reason, Aphrodite, he was constantly unfaithful. Hephaestus used to forgive the gray air that gave the goddess of love, but is that Hephaestus, the husband had a strange sense of things. He could think of nothing more than to surprise Aphrodite and Ares in bed, captured and warn the rest of gods to subject them to ridicule, to public ridicule. Hephaestus becomes the trickster, tricked.
The legend of Narcissus.

According to myth, Narcissus was a handsome young man of whom all fell in love. It must be so beautiful that Narcissus fell in love with himself. Every day the lake came to see his face reflected in it. One day, Narcissus, absorbed by the contemplation of her beauty, inadvertently fell into the lake and drowned. In the place where born sank a flower that bore the name of Narcissus.

Oscar Wilde wrote the continuation of this story in a story. In the version of Irish playwright, Lake, after the death of Narcissus, talks to the goddess of the forest, Oread, who concluded that the mourn, the lake has transformed water into freshwater. The goddesses thought the lake mourned Narcissus, but he was not exactly. The lake did not know that Narcissus was beautiful. The lake was crying because Narcissus would not bow down to see their beauty, so that the lake would be incapable of seeing, at the bottom of the Narciso eyes, her own beauty reflected.
